在过去的三十年中，滋根始终坚持通过教育实现以人为本的可持续发展。在1990 到2000 年代初期，我们的工作重点是基础教育，尤其是针对中国农村少数民族中的女孩上学的基础教育。在捐助者和滋根中国团队的支持与努力下，原本无法接受正规教育的女孩子们现在成为了第一代女教师，护士和企业家。
在联合国的可持续发展教育（ESD）框架下，我们与在中国可持续发展领域的专家合作，开发了丰富的参与式培训项目，且结合当地的需求与文化相关的课程。我们与联合国教科文组织中国可持续发展教育全国工作委员会开展了一项联合计划，通过建立“绿色生态文明学校”在农村学校推广可持续发展教育。迄今为止，在中国不同省份的 100 余所学校成为了滋根绿色生态文明学校，并且正在积极地在当地开展针对学生和社区的可持续发展教育。将来，我们希望可持续发展教育将可以纳入到中国正规教育系统中。

Over the past three decades, Zigen had stayed true to its mission of people-centered development through education. Our work during the 1990’s and early 2000’s focused on basic education particularly for girls in the rural ethnicminority groups. Through the support of donors and our team in China, we were gratified to enable cohorts of girls who otherwise would not have access to formal education to become the first generations women teachers, health care workers and entrepreneurs.
Our work in rural China has broadened to include Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) using the frame work provided by the United Nations. We worked with experts in the field of sustainable development in China, and had developed a course curriculum that is rich in participatory engagement and is locally relevant. We have embarked on a joint program with UNESCO in China to roll out these programs in rural schools through a “Green Eco School” program. To date, over100schools in different provinces in China had became Zigen Green Eco School, and local implementation of sustainable development education for the students and the community is actively underway. Our hope is for the formal education system to incorporate ESD in their curriculum.
